SHIELD’s founding purpose stems from the insight that the most transformative technologies being developed commercially—AI, autonomy, cyber, and space—will increasingly impact the Mission of U.S. national security. 

These four technology domains are critical to the U.S military, but also in securing our citizens and those companies vital to the resilience of our nation’s critical infrastructure—in utilities, financial services, chemical production, nuclear facilities, and telecommunications. Many of the SHIELD team have been warfighters in and out of uniform. We know first-hand the military’s frustrations working with outdated technologies that lag far behind those available to civilian consumers. SHIELD’s team is Mission-driven to deliver the latest and best technology to the men and women in our military and intelligence community—because their Mission Matters to us all.

Entrepreneurs in AI and cyber are likely to be building their businesses first in the commercial sector to ensure a rapid path to product-market fit before pursuing national security use cases for their solutions. SHIELD’s investment thesis encompasses this approach of commercial first for some businesses. Startup founders in autonomy and space may approach the Defense Department or the Intelligence Community as early customers and later pursue commercial customers. In these cases, SHIELD not only assists in developing government customers, but also in growing a successful commercial enterprise. SHIELD is not limited by a traditional dual use definition of serving both government and commercial customers at time of investment.

SHIELD was early to identify the competitive gaps between the venture capital industry and the defense industrial base at the intersection of commercial technology and national security.  SHIELD marshaled an extraordinary specialist team, developed a focused investment strategy, and formed an innovative strategic partnership with L3Harris Technologies to capitalize on these gaps to achieve competitive advantage and create material economic value.
